Livin' it up in Kuwait: Colour Me Mine, Marina Mall

Livin' it up in Kuwait will focus on activities and events taking in place in Kuwait. I will be giving a brief review of these and whether I would recommend them to others too.

First up is a review of 'Colour Me Mine'. I first saw this art/ceramic shop in Marina Mall and was intrigued to say the least. They also have a branch in The Avenues Mall, Al In London they have a few of these arty shops whereby you choose a a ceramic items and you can paint and glaze it and then pick it up at a later date. Sounds cool right!

Well with my background being in Fine Art, my friend Anna and had been wanting to visit 'Colour Me Mine' since we arrived in August but other ventures got in the way :P Anyways we ended up going one evening and we both chose to paint mugs. When you get there, the staff explain the process and you pay for the paints and materials as well as whatever item you wish to paint.

Before ( mine is on the left and Anna's is on the right)
So we chose a table and then went to choose our paints and tools for to paint our mugs. The choice of colours is okay - there tends to be a lot of shades of green, blue, yellow and orange. I wish there were more brighter colours to use. I ended choosing...guess??! :P Shades of blue/turquoise as I knew what I wanted to create. An ethnic/henna style mug. I didn't draw any patterns on my mug. It was all freestyle. The process was quite therapeutic. I adore art and painting. However, we both realised we had come a little too late and did have to rush a little at the end even though the staff were lovely and didn't pressure into leaving at the closing time.

As we painted these before the Winter vacation, we had to collect them after we were back from our travels. It was an anxious moment as we were both wondering if the colour had come out. Thankfully we were so pleased with the outcome. I LOVE my mug and was even thinking of creating a set. I know..crazy right! We are planning on going back to maybe design some  coasters or choose another item. I will be sure to post some more photos go those.

After :) So pleased with the results!
But for now, if you enjoy art or being creative I would definitely pop long to 'Colour Me Mine'. It has a relaxed atmosphere and the staff are lovely. It is reasonably priced. I think we paid 20KD  in total for the materials, paint and items which isn't too bad. You have to wait a week for them to fire/glaze your item and then it is yours to collect.

I hope you enjoyed reading.

What look am I rockin'? Fresh Faced!

Normally I don't wear makeup at the weekends if I am not going out but today I wanted to play around with some new products I bought recently. They were the Anastasia Beverley Hills (ABH) Contour kit, dipbrow pomade, brow gel and the Tammana eyeshadow palette as well as my Ben NYE Banana powder and Urban Decay Basics Naked Palette.

I really like the look but I think I would play down the eyeliner if I was to wear this to work. I am not going to give a complete breakdown of the products but talk about the ones mentioned above. So I contoured with the ABH Contour Kit which I really like. There is a contour shade for every complexion and also a shimmery highlighter. It applies softly and evenly which is a bonus. However I chose to use the The balm Mary Lou-Manizer to highlight today and this product I adore. It is so soft and silky and applies like a dream, plus you can build it up.

Next up is the ABH Dipbrow Pomade and Tinted Brow Gel in Chocolate. At first I was a bit apprehensive to apply this as I didn't want my eyebrows to look unnatural but the key is in how much product you use and how you use your brush. I started feathered underneath my brow and then brushed upwards and then feathered above and filled in. Then to top it off and set it I lightly brushed on the tinted brow gel. So just so you know I just took off my makeup now and my brows have stayed intact with no smudging. Brownie points!

I also used the Tammana eyeshadow palette which has some really pretty eyeshadows. I used China Rose which reminded me of MAC's Paradisco but is more buttery in texture. Then I used the UD palette to add a dark brown colour to the crease and highlight. I also used the Ben Nye Luxury Powder in Banana, a powder used by Kim K's make up artist. I usually use the LM Secret Brightening Powder which I love as it is light and doesn't settle into any lines underneath my eyes. I used the Ben Nye today and it did brighten my eyes subtly but I wasn't like wowed or anything. I think it is a little overrated and also what might work for someone may not work for you.

Overall, I am impressed with how these products have performed and hope I use them on a regular basis now!

My Thoughts: Teaching in Kuwait - 5 months on...

Last year I made the decision to apply to teach somewhere abroad. Out of all the beautiful places in the world, I chose the Middle East. Why? I love the culture. I have visited a few countries there already. I love the food. What more is there to ask for? So I ended up  getting a few job offers and chose Kuwait as that was the only country I had not been to. I did some research on it and it seemed a better place to reside, relax and also a great hub to travel to places from.

Fast forward to now...I have settled well. Unfortunately my flatmate wasn't enjoying it so she left at Christmas. I have found that the workload is now similar to the UK, I still have planning and marking and assessments. However, I have free periods to do this all in which ensures I do not take work home. The only work I do, do is planning and assessments at home as I can't seem to concentrate at work to do it.

In terms of teaching, it is going well. I love my class and the majority of my parents are lovely. I have a lovely rapport with my class. We're like a big family - they're always excited to tell me things which is sweet. I actually missed them when I was back in the UK for holidays. In terms of teaching and learning, I feel settled in Year 2 and that I am more creative as we don't have the same technologies as the UK. Also, I have been offered a great opportunity in terms of leadership which I am pleased about considering I am only in my 3rd year of teaching.

I do miss teaching in the UK though, it is more structured and teacher's are expected be more knowledgeable with regards to levels and their children's assessments. I can't wait to get back into UK teaching. I will definitely miss the free time and weekends though when I return to the UK.

The only two things I can't seem to comprehend are:

1. Teachers calling children 'dumb' and 'stupid' as if they cannot succeed.
The amount of times I hear this in the staffroom is unbelievable. Firstly, no child is dumb. They may take their time to learn something compared with a smarter child but they might actually excel in something else other than academics. Secondly, if that child is a low achiever then what is the teacher doing to ensure they can access the curriculum??

I am by no means an excellent teacher but I really strive hard in my job to make sure each child learns something or takes something useful away from each lesson.

2. Teacher's attitudes here.
Honestly I think in all the countries and I really don't mean this disrespectfully but  they must have had it really easy with teaching. Here there are the basics and all i hear is complaints all the time. It's like you're a teacher, you chose to move here, teach your kids to the best of their ability. The teachers here just want to relax and party and do the very very least amount of work. Teaching is my passion and when I see others not putting in 100% it does frustrate and make me sad as these children are the next generation and we need to instill good values and aspirations in them.

Sometimes I have to disregard these and just get on with my teaching but when it occurs daily it can be hard to take yourself out of the situation.

3. Parent's not parenting their children.
The culture here is to leave everything for the maid/nanny to do. I think I have seen very few if any parents discipline their children or care for them when they are out. Nothing is wrong with having a maid but being ignorant of them yes. I have had to teach my children that they need to brush their teeth, take showers daily and dress themselves. It is happy to know that they have listened to me and really proud that they can now brush their teeth and explain to their parents that they need to shower and dress themselves. I wish parents would take more responsibility in caring for their children.

I really hope that one day I am teaching in a school that has everything set in stone, with minimal changes and disruption and where I am valued as a member of staff. As we say in the Middle East, InshaAllah :P

What look am I rockin'? Arabian Style Eyes

So I have recently been following beauty blogger Farah Dhukai who is absolutely gorgeous and so sweet! She did a make up look that focused on Arabic eyes. Now living in Kuwait, Arabian girls the most beautiful eye makeup and I have no idea how they keep it intact throughout the day ( maybe secret trips to the restroom? lol) but my eye makeup tends to smudge by the end of the day.

Anyways, so yesterday I had a brunch date with my friend who is also a teacher in Kuwait. I thought why not experiment with Arabian Eyes?! When painting an Arabic style cat eye, it is really important to use a techniques you are comfortable with. I usually start mine from the middle and feather it slightly and then join together when I have achieved the thickness and precise line I want. Oh by the way, Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Rosegold is AMAZING! It is so soft and silky and dries like that too. Beautiful!

So below are a few photographs and a run down of the makeup products I used. Annoyingly I scraped my hair up in tousled bun as my hair wasn't curling as it usually does! #hairissues

Face: LM Tinted Moisturiser, LM Secret Camouflage in 05, Anastasia Beverley Hills Contour Kit, Dipbrow Pomade and Tinted Eyebrow Gel

Eyes: MAC P&P Highlighter in Peach Lustre and Bright Forecast, MAC Moisturecover Concealer in NW20, MAC Paints in Bare Canvas, LM Caviar Stick in Rosegold, Barry M Bold Eyeliner in Black, Revlon Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black, LM Eyelash Curler, UD Subversion Lash Primer, Revlon Photoready Mascara, UD Cannonball Mascara.

Cheeks: LM Baked Bronzer 03, Sleek Blush in Sahara

A lot of products I know but I have learnt the key to a flawless look is how you apply them and I am getting there!

I hope you enjoyed reading.
